“Matrescense” is defined as the process of becoming a mother. It’s a word used to describe the physical, psychological, and emotional changes people go through during the monumental transformation that is motherhood.

My new series “Matrescense” documents the calm, chaos, isolation, joy, overwhelm, exhaustion and tenderness of motherhood. This new age of child rearing when expectations are high but community is non-existent. Post covid I think a lot of us came out shell shocked and bewildered. Everyone in their own bubbles. I am hoping to share my view of my bubble in the hope others feel less alone in theirs.

Becoming a mother has deepened my appreciation for art’s ability to enrich life. Parenthood often entails a multitude of responsibilities and challenges, and yet, through art, I find solace, inspiration, and renewal. In the quiet moments stolen amidst the chaos of motherhood, I immerse myself in the creative process. The act of creating art becomes a sanctuary where I reconnect with my true self, nurturing my identity beyond the role of a caregiver. Art reminds me that I am more than a mother; I am an individual with dreams, aspirations, and a unique voice.

Moreover, art has become a bridge between motherhood and my children. Through creative exploration, we engage in collaborative projects, discovering new ways to communicate and bond. Art offers them a platform to express their emotions, explore their imaginations, and cultivate their own unique identities. Together, we embark on a journey of discovery, as art becomes a catalyst for meaningful conversations and shared experience.
