Manuport is the archaeological and anthropological expression for “a natural object, usually a stone, that has been carried and deposited somewhere by humans, but it has not been artificially shaped and may resemble a face or body. They seem to have been much loved found objects, and one was found in an archaeological dig in Co. Wicklow, held in the hand of an interred youth.   The oldest such object known to us is the so-called Makapansgat pebble, a piece of jasperite measuring 8.3 cm across and weighing 260 grams. It was found, together with remains of the oldest relatives of humankind, in the Makapansgat cave in South Africa in 1925. The ancient “readymade” moved from its place of origin through humanoid agency establishes a sort of proof that image-thinking is almost unimaginably old and that art has been enriching life since the beginning of time.
